As part of a postcard challenge for FAWM 2024 I was sent a picture postcard of streetcar in the USA in 1905. The car was numbered 579.
The history of the streetcars goes from a time of horse drawn ones replaced by electric ones that finally were outpaced by diesel vehicles and automobiles.
lyrics
I saw picture postcard
A street car in 1905
Showed the driver and conductor
With a message in their eyes
From car 579
They said the bosses got rid of the horses
Said they weren't needed now
Electricity had come
And their time was gone
So they gave us jobs on
Car 579
We carried all the people
To work to home to stores
Didn't matter if they were rich or poor
If they could pay the fare
On car 579
Then people started taking
Saying something bad was coming down the line
Could there be trouble for
Car 579?
One day in the future
Some might see a picture of you and I
And wonder what happened to us
Was it like 579?
