Do you remember when it was OK
To talk about love
You could say, ‘I love you, I love them’
A novel or a place

Sometimes is was superficial you could say
‘You love that and I love it too
Maybe that means
I love you’

But don’t you think that even so
No-one got hurt, beaten up or got shot for
Saying
What they loved?

And how about now
Isn’t it now more important to hate?
To say ‘I hate this, I hate that.’
To be seen to show distaste

Now you can hate people, countries
People that are different
Things that confuse you
Or things that don’t even exist

It’s an endless stream
Of finding stuff
To loudly condem
And detest

But it’s very inclusive
You find your tribe
Of fellow haters
Then you, you too belong

You don’t even have to mean it
Just show your hate it
Demonstrate
Your passionate contempt

But there are some downsides
Don’t you think?
Hating is exhausting
Takes up all your time

And of course
Those you hate
Are hurt, are isolated
Get to feel not so good

And you might find that
You, in turn, are scorned are spurned
When the spite is
Turned back on you

Don’t you think
That all this hate
Makes this world
A hateful place

Don’t you think
It would be
Better to
Love?
